I'm sorry but I can't add anything about Eric's family history but I do remember my father Freddy Kerr of Ely used to be very proud of the fact that he fought Eric Boon and beat him. This was of course just before Eric became a champion and would have been perhaps in about 1935/6 when my dad was 15/16. Dad wanted to become a professional boxer too but his mother wouldn't let him in case it ruined his pretty face!

He joined the Army instead and became a Japanese prisoner during the war. They used to have boxing matches in prison camp and it was also well known among the other soldiers that he had beaten Eric.

Good luck with your research!

Hi Michael/

I am at the moment compiling the boxing records of Jewish boxers fron the East End of London. I would be interested in purchasing a photo of your Father (Harry Kid Silver)

plus any photo copies of programmes from East London venues that he boxed at.

Kind regard

Ray

Hi - I hope you don't mind me contacting you but I was wondering if you could help me out with a query.
My Dad, Harry  is President of the Kent Ex-Boxers Association and was discussing Eric Boon with some other boxing enthusiasts and they were wondering where Eric's Lonsdale Belt is. My Dad has looked through lots of his old Boxing News's and found an article stating that Eric had to pawn the belt. He has looked through subsequent publications (he has every single one from 1940 onwards!) but cannot find out whether Eric was able to buy it back or whether it was bought by someone else.

He would be really grateful for any information you have re the belt's whereabouts.

Harry Kid Silver

I first met Harry in 1940/41 whilst being employed in a government armaments factory in Hayes, Middlesex, working as a cost/despatch clerk. Harry was employed in a supervisory capacity on the factory floor. I left at the age of 18 to join the RAF in November 1941. Harry, I believe, was some 3 years older than me and I do not know whether he continued to work in this vital, protected industry, or whether he joined the armed forces.

Harry and I became good friends. He was so easy to get along with and we met up on a daily basis at work. There were lots of things to chat about and I learned of his friendship with Eric Boon. Sometimes I saw Harry in the morning after one of his fights, with extensive bruising and black eyes. He never talked about his fights and just accepted it all. He was such a nice and friendly person and I think in someway, rather protective of me. When I left in November 1941 to join the RAF, Harry gave me an action photograph, signed "To Eddy, Yours in sport, London1941". This photograph I had by my bedside in barrack block accomodation for airman, whilst in New Dehli, India, serving in the RAF for nearly 4 years. Other airmen noted it and thought "Eddie has a good friend in Harry" and as a consequence was never 'got at' by bullying airmen.

In 2001 I telephoned the British Board of Boxing Control and obtained details of Harry's career. They were very helpful and this followed reading Jack Solomons 'Tell All' autobiography, which was great reading. I've always regretted not meeting up with Harry again, I liked him very much. He was so friendly and I can imagine well loved by many people.

I am now 86 years old and thanks to my friend Howard, I am becoming familiar with my new laptop. He has made it possible for me to read your reply to the Eric Boon blog on the Herts24 & Cambs 24 Forums. We found it by 'googling' Harry's name.

Thank you very much Michael. I never forgot about Harry over 60 or more years. My best and sincere wishes to you and your family.

Eddie

I am currently wrting a Who's Who of everyone who has appeared in a Carry On film, Eric appeared in 2 of them, below is the current bio I have for him, I hope some of you find it useful, if anyone can add to this or there are errors please let me know.

Orginally a boxer and he was British Light-Weight boxing champion between 1938-44. His nickname as a boxer was Fen Tiger or Boy Boon and he fought 119 contests winning 92 with 62 knockouts, he lost 21 (13 by knockout) and drew 5.

He was only eighteen when he became champion and during the war he served in the RAF and served in Australia, Canada and America. It was in 1944 that he made his first screen appearance in Champagne Charlie a film that starred Toomy Trinder and Stanley Holloway.

He appeared as a boxer in 1952 in the film The Gambler and A Lady but his scenes were cut from the final version, this was the final year when he retired as a boxer. His only other known screen appearances are his two appearances in the Carry Ons.

Michael,
David is living well. His progeny are adults, and I am one of them. We don't have any pictures of our biological grandfather and almost zero information. I'm sure the entire family will want to email you. I hope you get this message.

- Brook
